Privacy policy

For the OwnMedia Android app and this website. Last updated 19 October 2026.

OwnMedia talks only to the media servers you add to it (Jellyfin, Navidrome or another Subsonic server). We, the developers, receive nothing from the app: there is no OwnMedia account, no analytics, no crash reporting, no ads and no tracking.

The app and this site are made by MROYA SIA (reg. No. 50203370261, Riga, Ganibu dambis 20A, LV-1045). Contact: support@ownmedia.app.

Your servers and sign-in

  • You enter the address of your server and sign in to it. Your password goes only to that server and is not stored on the phone.
  • What the app keeps to stay signed in (a Jellyfin access token, or a salted Subsonic token) is stored on the phone in Android’s encrypted storage.
  • The app sends your server what any client does: what you browse, what you play and how far you got, so the server can show your progress and played marks. Songs you mark with ♥ are saved as favorites on the server.
  • To find your server on the home Wi-Fi, the app sends a discovery message on the local network. It doesn’t leave your network.
  • Before converting a video for a slow connection, the app may download a few megabytes of test data from your server to measure the speed.

Sharing with friends (invites)

  • When you share your server, your server (with the OwnMedia plugin) makes an invite: the friend’s name as you typed it, the libraries you picked and a secret one-time code. They are stored on your server only.
  • The invite link contains your server’s address and that code. You send it yourself, with the messenger or app you choose; it works once, for 7 days.
  • When a friend uses it, your server makes a separate sign-in for them that only sees the chosen libraries. Your server then keeps which phone joined (the model name the phone reports, for example “Google Pixel 10a”), when the friend last used the server and what they are playing, so that you see it under “Who has access”. Only you, the owner, see this, and nothing of it reaches us. “End access” deletes their sign-in.
  • The friend’s app stores your server’s address and their own sign-in token, in Android’s encrypted storage, like for any server.
  • Your server’s internet address, if you use one, comes from Tailscale Funnel (see Third parties).

Photo and video backup (optional)

  • Only if you turn it on. The app then reads your photos and videos, including the place they were taken, and uploads them to the Jellyfin server you chose, where the Homeplay Backup plugin stores them in a folder you set. It works in the background, over Wi-Fi and mobile data.
  • They go to your server only. The app keeps a list of what it has uploaded on the phone, so it does not send anything twice.
  • Nothing is deleted from the phone. You can turn backup off at any time.

Downloads and saved songs

  • Movies, episodes and music you download are stored in the app’s own storage on the phone. Uninstalling the app removes them.
  • When you play downloads without a connection, the app remembers where you stopped and sends that to your server once it is reachable again.
  • “Save to phone’s Music” is different: it copies the original song file into the phone’s Music folder (Music/Homeplay), where other music players see it. These files stay on the phone if you uninstall the app.

Android Auto

In the car, the app lists the music from your downloads and your servers and plays it. Android Auto gets the titles and artists of what is shown and playing, as with any music app. Voice search sends your words, as text from Android, to your servers to find the songs.

Play on TV

To show a video on a smart TV, the app looks for TVs on your Wi-Fi (UPnP/DLNA) and gives the chosen TV a link to the file on your server, including the access needed to play it. The TV downloads the file straight from your server over your home network. Where you stopped goes to your server, as with ordinary playback. Nothing of this leaves your home network or reaches us.

Permissions

  • Photos and videos, media location: only for the optional backup.
  • Notifications: for playback controls and download and backup progress.
  • Network: to reach your servers and TVs.
  • Foreground service: to keep music playing and downloads running with the screen off.

Third parties

The app shares no data with third parties. Connections go directly from your phone to your server, for example over your home network, or over Tailscale if you use it. If your server is opened to the internet with Tailscale Funnel, connections to its ….ts.net address pass through Tailscale’s servers in encrypted form; Tailscale’s own privacy policy applies to your Tailscale account.

One exception, which you can turn off: when you open the lyrics of a song your server has no lyrics for, the app looks them up on LRCLIB (lrclib.net), a free open collection of lyrics. Only the song’s title, artist and length are sent, with no account or identifier of yours. Turn it off in Settings → Music → Lyrics from LRCLIB.

The Android app downloaded from this website asks ownmedia.app once a day which version is the newest (the file /download/version.json), to offer an update. Like any website visit, this shows our web host your IP address; nothing else is sent, and nothing is kept by us. Turn it off in Settings → Updates.

This website

  • No cookies, no analytics, no tracking, and nothing is loaded from other websites.
  • Like any web server, our hosting provider (Hostinger) keeps standard access logs (IP address, page, time, browser) for security and operation.
  • If you leave your email for Google Play, the form sends it and your answers to Formspree, the service that delivers the form to us. We use them only to tell you when OwnMedia is on Google Play, to invite you to its test if you ticked the box, and to understand what people need, and delete them on request: write to support@ownmedia.app.

Children

OwnMedia is not directed at children under 13.
