Version 0.3.16 for Android

Your movies and music.
Your server. One app.

OwnMedia plays the movies, shows, music and photos on your own Jellyfin or Navidrome server. Almost any file plays as it is, at home and away, with nothing sent anywhere else.

Version 0.3.16 for Android phones. If the phone warns about an unknown developer, tap More details → Install anyway. The app tells you when a new version is out.Coming to Google Play.

Everything on your server, in your pocket

Movies and shows from Jellyfin, music from Jellyfin or Navidrome, photos both ways. One app instead of two or three.

Music, done properly

A home for your music: recently added, recently played, most played and favorites. Instant Mix plays songs like the one you love. Lyrics follow the song, line by line. Albums play without gaps, and you see the real format: FLAC · 24-bit · 96 kHz. The queue is still there after a restart.

Plays every file

Built on mpv: MKV, HEVC, AV1, DTS, Dolby, FLAC and styled ASS subtitles, as they are, no waiting for the server to convert.

Plays through bad coverage

While you listen, the next songs are saved on the phone, so the music goes on in tunnels, lifts and on the train. On mobile data, choose 320, 192 or 128 kbps and save your plan.

Share with friends

Send a link. Your friend gets the app and joins your server with one tap — no password, no setup. You see who watches what, and end access with one button.

Your photos, on your server

New photos and videos go to your own server seconds after you take them. No cloud, no monthly fee.

On the TV and in the car

Play on your TV over the home Wi-Fi (how). Android Auto with your music and voice search.

Away from home

The Windows installer opens your server to the internet through Tailscale, with no router settings. Prefer your own VPN? That works too.

Downloads for offline

A movie, a whole season or an album for the plane. Where you stopped reaches your server when you’re back online.

No strings

No account, no ads, no analytics. The app talks to your servers. Two small exceptions, both easy to turn off: lyrics from LRCLIB, and a daily look at ownmedia.app for a new version.

Versions 0.3.14 and 0.3.15

What’s new

  • Home tab for music on Jellyfin and Navidrome: recently added, recently played, most played, favorites.
  • Instant Mix from any song, album or artist.
  • Synced lyrics, from your server or LRCLIB.
  • Gapless albums; the sound format under the seek bar.
  • Songs ahead: the next songs are saved on the phone and play without a connection.
  • Data saver for music on mobile data.
  • The queue survives a restart; swipe the mini player to change songs; letters on the side of long lists.
  • Invites download the newest app from ownmedia.app; the app tells you about new versions.
  • Fixed: notification buttons after a long pause.

Start in three steps

A few minutes on Windows, about half an hour on a NAS. Once.

1

Set up the server

On a Windows PC, one installer does it all: Jellyfin, your folders, access from the internet. On a NAS or with Docker, a short guide.

2

Add it in the app

At home, OwnMedia finds the server on your Wi-Fi by itself. Sign in with the name and password you chose during setup.

3

Invite your people

Pick what to share, send the link. Friends watch from anywhere; they can’t delete anything or pass the access on.

How it’s different

There are good free Jellyfin apps. Here is what OwnMedia does its own way, and where it isn’t there yet.

  • Video and music togetherJellyfin movies and shows, Jellyfin music and Navidrome or any Subsonic server, in one app with one player.
  • The phone does the hard workThe mpv player plays the original file. A server without a strong graphics card isn’t asked to convert HEVC or DTS on the fly.
  • Comes with the server sideA Windows installer that sets up Jellyfin and internet access, a plugin for NAS and Docker, photo backup and invites for friends, made to work together.
  • Made for people who aren’t adminsNo ports to open, no reverse proxy, no accounts for friends to create.

Not yet

No app for the TV itself: “Play on TV” sends video from the phone to a smart TV instead (how).

Plex and Emby servers aren’t supported; OwnMedia works with Jellyfin and Navidrome/Subsonic.

A look inside

The “liquid glass” look: frosted cards over your colours, light or dark.

Questions

Do I need my own server?

Yes. OwnMedia plays what is on your Jellyfin or Navidrome server; it doesn’t sell or stream any content of its own. No server yet? Any Windows PC that stays on can be one: the OwnMedia installer sets it up in a few clicks. A NAS works too.

What is Jellyfin?

A free, open-source media server. It sorts the movies, shows, music and photos in your folders, fetches posters and descriptions, and serves them to apps like OwnMedia. Navidrome is the same idea for music only. OwnMedia isn’t made by either project.

Do I need Tailscale?

Not at home: there, the phone talks to the server over your Wi-Fi. To watch away from home, the Windows installer can set up Tailscale for you (a free service; you sign in once in the browser). If you already reach your server another way, a VPN or your own domain, OwnMedia uses that. More about remote access.

What happens to my data?

It stays between your phone and your server. There is no OwnMedia account, and the app sends us nothing about you: no analytics, no crash reports, no ads. The app from this site asks ownmedia.app once a day whether there is a new version; you can turn that off. Details in the privacy policy.

How do I get new versions?

The app tells you when a new version is out (Settings → Updates). Tap to download it and install it over the old one: your servers, downloads and settings stay. The newest version is always at ownmedia.app/download.

Can I watch on my TV?

Yes. “Play on TV” sends a movie or an episode to most smart TVs on your Wi-Fi (they accept video from phones over UPnP/DLNA), and your phone becomes the remote. There is no separate app for Android TV, LG or Samsung TVs. How it works.

Who else can see my server?

Only the people you invite. “Share with friends” in the app makes an invite link for the libraries you choose; it works once, for 7 days. The friend adds your server with one tap, with no password, and can only watch and listen. Under “Who has access” you see each friend’s phone, when they last watched and what they’re watching now, and “End access” closes their access at once. How invites work.
